🇿🇦🇰🇷On Monday 11 November, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea hosted the annual Turn Toward Busan ceremony in Cape Town, a tribute to South African veterans who served in the Korean War.

Held at the South African Air Force Museum at Air Force Base Ysterplaat, the ceremony brought together South Africans and South Koreans to remember the contributions and sacrifices made by those South Africans who fought in the Korean War. The sole Cape Town-based Korean War survivor was in attendance.

A total of 826 South Africans served in the Korean War, primarily in 2 Squadron of the South African Air Force (SAAF), also known as the “Flying Cheetahs.” These volunteers fought alongside other UN forces from 1950 until 1953, flying F-51D Mustangs and later F-86F Sabres as part of the USAF 18th Fighter-Bomber Wing. Their service came at a heavy price, with 14 men killed in action, 11 missing in action, nine lost in aircraft accidents and a further two dying from other causes. A further eight pilots were taken prisoner and held in horrendous conditions.

🇿🇦🚢🇩🇪 German warships avoid passage through the Red Sea, rerouted via South Africa

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) decided on Monday that the frigate "Baden-Württemberg" and the supply ship "Frankfurt am Main" should instead take the much longer route around the Cape of Good Hope when returning from their months-long Indo-Pacific mission. This shows how great the concern about further escalation in the Middle East currently is.

🐅 South African tiger farms illegally smuggling body parts, says charity

The largest tiger farms outside Asia are operating freely in South Africa, facilitating the illegal smuggling of tiger body parts, according to a report by an animal welfare charity.

Research by Four Paws, which is campaigning to shut down South Africa’s big cat industry, found 103 places in the country where tigers were kept in captivity in 2023 or 2024 or had been kept during the previous three years.

Several facilities were breeding tigers to sell their body parts to China or Vietnam for use in traditional medicine, the report said, identifying three networks it said were known or suspected to be involved.

Members of one network of “interlinked criminal syndicates” posted photos on social media advertising “tiger products”, which the report said were suspected to be tiger bone glue.

In another photo that the report included in anonymised form, network members claimed they were cooking tigers somewhere in South Africa.

🦏 Relentless poachers butcher 20 dehorned rhinos in KZN sanctuary

The dehorning project in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi rhino sanctuary in KwaZulu-Natal has suffered a setback, with at least 20 dehorned animals gunned down for their remnant horn stumps over the past month.

Earlier this year, a massive operation began in the 96,000ha Hluhluwe-iMfolozi rhino sanctuary to remove the horns of hundreds of rhinos to reduce the relentless poaching in a state-owned park that still protects a significant portion of the beleaguered species.

The operation, with further assistance from Wildlife ACT, Save the Rhino International and Zululand Wildlife Vets, led to immediate conservation dividends. According to WWF, the mass dehorning resulted in a sharp 70% to 80% drop in poaching in the park.

However, now it has emerged that at least 20 dehorned rhinos were killed in October by a poaching gang believed to be connected to a Mozambique-based syndicate.

🇿🇦 Vlaams Belang: South African government tries to marginalize Afrikaner identity

In a recent committee meeting of the Flemish Parliament, Vlaams Belang MP Kristof Slagmulder expressed his deep concern about the increasing marginalisation of Afrikaans as a language of instruction in South Africa. “ Afrikaans is not just a language; it is an essential part of the identity of millions of South Africans and is also closely linked to Dutch,” he said.

Slagmulder pointed to recent policies that have seen universities and schools replace Afrikaans with English as the primary language of instruction, potentially making Afrikaans impossible as a language of instruction in the future. “This trend is worrying,” Slagmulder said. “It is a deliberate attempt to marginalize a language and culture that has been an integral part of South African society for centuries.”

Slagmulder called on the Flemish government to take concrete measures for the Afrikaans-speaking community.

“Flanders shares historical and linguistic ties with Afrikaans. It is our duty to stand up for the rights of this community and to advocate for the preservation of Afrikaans in education,” Slagmulder added, pointing out in this context that Flemish people are also confronted with a language struggle, such as the Frenchification of the Denderstreek or the Brussels periphery, and the Anglicisation of our universities.

🇿🇦 South African government says it won’t help thousands of illegal miners inside a closed mine

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South Africa’s government says it will not help an estimated 4,000 illegal miners inside a closed mine in the country’s North West province who have been denied access to basic supplies as part of an official strategy against illegal mining.

The miners in the mineshaft in Stilfontein are believed to be suffering from a lack of food, water and other basic necessities after police closed off the entrances used to transport their supplies underground.

It is part of the police’s Vala Umgodi, or Close the Hole, operation, which includes cutting off miners’ supplies to force them to return to the surface and be arrested.

North West police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone said information received from those who recently helped bring three miners to the surface indicated that as many as 4,000 miners may be underground. Police have not provided an official estimate.

In the past few weeks, over 1,000 miners have surfaced at various mines in North West province, with many reported to be weak, hungry and sickly after going for weeks without basic supplies.

Police continue on Thursday to guard areas around the mine to catch all those appearing from underground.

Police ordered to end standoff with trapped South Africa miners

A South African court has ordered that a police blockade of a disused goldmine, in which hundreds of people are located illegally, be lifted.

Emergency services have been at the site, in Stilfontein, around 90 miles south-west of Johannesburg, for several days. Police have blocked food and water entering the mine to, as one government minister put it, "smoke them out".

The miners - who have been underground for a month - have so far refused to exit the mine over fears of being arrested. Among them are undocumented migrants who also fear deportation.

Police welcomed the order but said it would not stop them arresting miners who left the mine.

💰 South Africans Pull $2.8 Billion From Pensions, Beating Estimate

South Africans have withdrawn 49.6 billion rand ($2.8 billion) from retirement funds since new laws came into effect three months ago giving them early access to part of their savings.

The figure is almost double the amount the National Treasury forecast savers would tap after the implementation of a so-called two-pot pension system on Sept. 1. South Africa’s central bank has said that a high-withdrawal scenario may help boost the country’s economic growth rate by as much as 0.3 percentage points this year.
